Tourist Family - Is it a layered movie(Decoded)


Saw the movie second time with my parents again Trying to decode it based on my own observation.


I have not seen any decoding videos or something.I am not even sure if somebody decoded.

First thing is that probably this is the first time a filmmaker has tried to portray Srilankan Tamils also as an innocent ethnic group that faces adversity while most of the Bollywood movie sets up a negative narrative.

On the surface level even though the movie looks just like a story of a Srilankan Refugee family trying to find livelihood.It seems to me that there seems to be a layer beneath that tries to talk about the conflict and the accusations on the Srilankan Tamils.



Some of them that came to my mind

1. The Asst.Commissioner is shown as a Punjabi which is somewhat similar to the Sikh Regiment led Sikh Officers which went as part of IPKF during Conflict and unleashed brutalities.

2. The Bomb blast that happens is finally found to be somebody elses doing and a remark is made by Police Constable that it could be by someone  else as it is election time. This could be reference to the suspected  involvement of many foreign forces in the killings of Rajiv Gandhis Murder which remains a mystery.Or atleast as a  Conspiracy theory.

3. And there is a also a scene in which MS Bhaskar says ' Is it the dialect of tamil or speaking Tamil itself is a problem?'. Originally one of the issues which came about in Srilanka Ethnic conflict as well as a current issue in Tamilnadu

So the director Abhishan even though claimed he wanted to make an apolitical film focused on a Srilankan Tamil familys struggles to find a livelihood, it seems like there are many layers in this movie which has been  inserted with subtlety.

And dont think it is unintentional.

I feel goosebumps while writing a review about this movie.Such has been the impact of this magnum opus in Tamil Cinema Standards directed by one of my favourite directors Selvaraghavan. I believe for first time in the history of Tamil Cinema a movie has touched upon a theme which has left so many historians and people who have read about history flabbergasted.I personally have read history much earlier and still had the same puzzle for this question.Many learned scholars of history are still to come up witha theory about "How the great Chola Dynasty which at its peak had territories that included 70 % of India,Ceylon,Far East suddenly vanished into thin air?".There seems to be no descendent of the dynasty.It is this question Mr.Selvaraghavan attempts to answer.I may not be a learned film critic,but in my view he has done great justice to his attempt back...

Meyyazhagan a beautiful movie(Glorius Past)

Meyyazhagan. I did not notice about this movie untill my mother bombarded our family whatsapp group with youtube videos on this movie related interviews. She mentioned in our group in chat "Vijay!we have to definitely watch this movie.This is set in Thanjavur.They are showing Needamangalam." My mother rarely feels excited about movies.This time she felt because it was about Tanjavur. So immediatley I booked tickets for 2nd day itself as my brother was also in India for a meeting. I watched the 3 hour movie and felt very  moved.It was very very relatable to me.My mother side is from a village near Kovilvenni.This place is prominently mentioned and becomes a key part of the movie.Its where the fiercesome war between Cholas and Cheras were fought and referred to as Venniparanthalai.I was born in a town Ammapet one stop before Kovilvenni and spent many of my summer holidays in my mothers village.  While watching the movie we were pleasantly surprised not just Needaman...

The Village

well you guys must have seen the movie called "The Vilage" directed by Manoj K Shyamalan.I am a great fan of Shyamalan's work.I have seen all his feature films save "Lady in the water".Of all the films he has done i like "The Village" the most.Ya i know that u wud be shocked coz its one of the most underrated works. I guess its mainly because most of them were not able to understand the "The Village"story.Its a story which has been daringly concieved.Its close to my heart because I have always felt myself if something like this can happen.
