Inglorius Basterds
I had come across the name of Quentin Tarantino's name as a cult movie director who kinda revolutionised film making and all that stuff.His movie 'Pulp Fiction' which is considered a cult movie.
But honestly i had seen pulp fiction once and could not understand head or tail of it.Probably i had seen the movie earlier when my ability to comprehend was poor.
Recently i had read rave reviews about his 'Inglorious Basterds' and also about a new actor Christoph Waltz and wanted to see that very badly.I did manage to buy a DVD with english subtitle and see the movie.
I now understood why Tarantino is such a celeberated director.Such an amazing screenplay.It so slick that you dont feel for a moment that it is a period film set in 1940s.
The story goes like this.Col Hans Landa(CHristoph Waltz) is the top gun of the dreaded SS unit of Nazi which is entrusted with the task of Jew genocide.He is so good that he has earned a nick name 'The Jew Hunter'.
Mean while Lt.Aldo Raine (BRad Pitt)is a jewish American who puts together a bunch of Jewish soldiers in america to pay the nazis by the same coin.All of them are supposed to hunt Nazis and take their scalp as a souvenir if i may say so.They keep hunting the nazis and soon they begin to fear them and they are called 'Inglorius Basterds'.They leave some of the nazis so that they can go alive tell their fellow nazis about the dreaded gang but before they are left they are carved with a swastik symbol on thier foreheads personally signed by Lt.Aldo Raines Knife.
One of the jewish gal Shosanna Drayfus who escapes while all the other members were killed by Col.Landa about 5 years back is in France and running a theater she has inherited.A young nazi soldier tries to befriend her who really happens to be a war hero Fredrick Zoller in whose act a film is made. Fredrick Zollers has a soft spot for the Shosunna and convinces the director of the movie to change the venue of premiere from The Ritz to Shosannas theatre.A famous german hero-inBridget Von Hammersmark is also one of the spies of US allies who tries to help her as she plans to give information about the premiere of the movie which is going to be held in paris where all top nazi official including Hitler is to be present.She also has information that the premier is to be held in a small theatre instead of THe Ritz which was as per initial plans.Even though she tries to contact the 'Basterds' in a unfrequented place but things turn upside down and leads to an unexpected shppt out in which 3 basters are killed.
But Lt.Aldo Raine and couple of his men with Bridget still to go to the premier to blow up the place in the guise of Bridget Italin movie industry friends.Col.Landa who is entrusted with the security of premiere finds all this as he is an expert and kills Bridget and takes Lt.Aldo Raine to his place while leaving other two basterds with explosives in the movie hall intentionally.
But Col.Landa doesnt know is that Shosanna and his black Friend are plotting to lock the theatre and bring it down by fire which is going to be filled with top nazis and Hitler as a revenge to the genocide.But Landa has left the basterds uncaptured intentionally as he negotiates for asylum in US with top honour of BRavery for his part in bringing down the Third Reich.US gocvernment agrees to that.The theatre is brought down by the fire set by Shosanna and Black and basterds for their part play their role of killing Hitler and countless nazis whil the fire is engulfing them.
Lt.Aldo Raine is dissappointed that Col.Hans Landa has gotten his way and decides to give one thing which he will have to remember.
The movie ends with Lt.Aldo Raine carving swastik with his knife is Col.Hans LAnda's forehead while the latters screaming.Lt.AldoRaines quips to his fellow prabably this swastik may be his master piece.
Christoph Waltz is a hell of an actor who has just lived the role of Col Hans Landa.None of his action looks like acting.He is such a good actor that we are left wondering why he was not given a chance before.Well thats how life goes.
